Next is a short film created from live footage extracted and collaged from an online chat room where users can engage in video and audio chat with friends and strangers anywhere in the world. Each chat room grid has the capacity for 12 simultaneous live video streams, but up to 400 live participants who can interject vocally, or just ‘lurk’ in the background and watch the 12 'performers' for uncounted hours. Next focuses on the interaction between a group of regular chat room users, in a dialogue about the nature of their online world and the democracies and politics that naturally emerge within this new way of interaction.
